Pedal Pushers …. What’s it all about?

Pedal Pushers Cyclery Limited had its inception in a small Rangitikei Street store in 1976 under the guidance of Frank Clavis and Stuart Watts. Their philosophy was to offer cyclists more choice at a fair price. A philosophy that still exists today under Garry Buys’ ownership.

In 1979 (as the then ‘head mechanic’) Garry bought shares in Pedal Pushers from the original owners, and was now in partnership with Ian Gray, who had also acquired a shareholding.

Garry had decided to retire from competitive cycling after racing in Europe to concentrate on perfecting his mechanical skills – developing a subsequent talent for frame building. The success of his meticulously handcrafted and finished Vincolo frames were testimony to his ability and were endorsed by some of New Zealand’s leading cyclists of the day (Anthony Cuff, Michael McRedmond and Nathan Dahlberg).

With a ‘growing reputation’ and an ever-expanding business the two partners moved their operation to its previous Church Street location in 1986.

By 1993 Garry had become the sole principal of Pedal Pushers and proceeded to introduce an innovative sales and marketing programme, supported by an enthusiastic and dedicated team of cycle-orientated personnel, to help project Pedal Pushers as ‘New Zealand’s Ultimate Bike Shop’…

Unquestionably … Pedal Pushers offers its clients New Zealand’s largest selection of frames and accessories and arguably the best advice and service… Plus the one year free service plan is testimony to Garry and his team’s commitment to ‘making quality cycling accessible to everyone’.

In 1994 Pedal Pushers won the Inaugural Award for ‘New Zealand’s Best Bike Shop’, came runner-up in 1995 and repeated their ’94 triumph by winning again in 1996 and also in 1997. Pedal Pushers high profile ‘Cycling Top and Shorts’ won a very prestigious ‘Pride in Print New Zealand’ Gold Medal award for design and screen-printing in 1996.

In 2004 Garry and the Team moved into Ferguson Street to become New Zealand’s finest purpose-built Bike Shop with some 900sqm of high profile Retail & Workshop space.

When you shop with us… you really do get ‘The Pedal Pushers Advantage”
